From 1870 November until 1871 June, he was a Texas Ranger in Company F of the Frontier Battalion, serving under Capt. David P. Baker. Drawing on his own experiences as a Texas Ranger, events in his relatives’ lives, family history, and interviews, Sowell wrote numerous books and articles about the early history of Texas. His books include Rangers and Pioneers of Texas, Life of Big Foot Wallace, Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas, and History of Fort Bend County. Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas was published in 1900. Sowell died in 1921.

This is a great book on the early settlers of Texas and shows the hardships they had to endure. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most of it is the old pioneers and rangers giving their recollections of the early times. It was written in 1897 or so. Memories fade with the years so some of the reflections may be embellished some. He names the men who rode on the trails of Indian raiders. Men who were killed in these raids. It also recorded exploits of the early Texas rangers naming then. If I had anything to criticize this book about is it sometimes got bogged down with the recording of the names. This is a must for anyone that had family in Texas during this time and was doing genealogy. Who knows you might find an exploit of your gggreatgrandfather in it.
